The Gangways of Arouca was recognized in the World Travel Awards, the awards considered the "Oscars of Tourism".
The Pedestrian path built along the banks of the Paiva's river, Arouca, was opened in 2015 and lived on the last night, one of its high points with the victory in the category of "Development Project Leader in Europe", awarded by the World Travel Awards at a ceremony in Sardinia, Italy .
Through an online public vote and professionals in the tourism sector, which took place between March 7 and 17 July, the Portuguese project competed with the luxury resort "Costa Navarino" in Greece, and the Trail of Bydgoszcz water, Industry and Handicraft in Poland.
Since their opening to the public, in June 2015, the Paiva gangways have made the news several times. Last summer these 2000 square metres of wood took thousands of people to the beds of the Paiva River, leading to nooks and crannies never seen before in such detail.
The 8.7 kilometres of gangways hit a record of 10000 people in just one day, in search of this protected wilderness and the much desired photograph. There were considerable changes to the tourism in the area, the creation of business (and others that reemerged), and complaints from the environmentalists.
The access is now limited to 3500 people per day, and each person has to pay 1 euro and book online Passadiços do Paiva beforehand and show the reservation ticket to the staff at each of the entrance checkpoints along the way.
The World Travel Awards were established in 1993, celebrating this year its 23th edition, aiming to reward the best industry initiatives by assigning a recognition quality and innovation.
